Cleopatra VII, last dynasty of ancient Egypt

The image of Cleopatra in modern popular culture can be quite different from the historical truth. Cleopatra was a descendant of Alexander the Great’s general, Ptolemy, and was of Greco-Macedonian descent, belonging to the Ptolemaic dynasty. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and Antiquities, Cleopatra was a brown-skinned woman with ancient Greek features, which can be seen in ancient paintings and statues depicting her.

Cleopatra’s features as seen on historical artifacts, such as coins and statues, depict a typical Greek appearance: curly hair, prominent hawk nose, and deep-set eyes. These depictions are typical of idealized representations of kings and queens of the time and do not necessarily reflect her actual appearance. On the other hand, Cleopatra’s appearance in Egyptian-style representations is different, as ancient Egyptian art tended to stereotype figures. These different depictions add to the complexity of determining what a historical figure actually looked like.

Modern depictions of Cleopatra can be vastly different from the historical reality. She was actually a Greek-Macedonian descendant of the Ptolemaic dynasty, and archaeological evidence shows that she had the physical features of ancient Greece. However, many modern creations misrepresent her as an exotic, sexy woman of the East. This false image is often represented by Cleopatra wearing heavy makeup, long lustrous black hair, and a slender figure.

Furthermore, in some digital media, images that falsely depict Cleopatra as a white woman with blonde or red hair are circulated in the name of “historical reconstruction.” This is a creation that has no historical basis whatsoever, as Cleopatra’s family actually considered blonde or red hair to be barbaric. In reality, the Egyptian upper class may have been traders or soldiers with Caucasian appearances, but they were not the ruling class of society.

As you can see, there is a disconnect between modern and ancient depictions of Cleopatra because standards of beauty can vary greatly across time and geography. The standards of beauty in ancient Egypt were different from those in medieval Europe or the modern West, and these differences affect the interpretation of Cleopatra’s image. Because of this, the image of Cleopatra that we commonly see is likely not the one that she actually looked like.

Popular perceptions of Cleopatra often don’t match historical facts. While she’s known as the Queen of Egypt, she was actually of Caucasian Greek descent and is known to have had a similar appearance to the ancient Greeks. This is because Cleopatra was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, which was founded by Alexander the Great’s general, Ptolemy.

It is sometimes argued that Cleopatra was black, but this does not take into account the demographic makeup of the region she ruled. While there were indeed black residents in Egypt, the predominant ethnic makeup of Egypt at the time was Arab. Cleopatra herself was more of a Middle Eastern Caucasian, and due to her mixed Greek and Turkic heritage, there was not much difference in appearance between the two ethnicities.

In Western historical drama and art, Cleopatra is often depicted as a member of a European royal family, a depiction that owes more to the imagination of the creators than to historical reality. This is similar to the depiction of ancient Greek gods with Nordic appearances. As a result, Cleopatra’s image is the result of cultural reinvention rather than historical authenticity, and she is represented in popular culture in a way that is not true to her actual appearance. This misrepresentation leads to misconceptions about what Cleopatra actually looked like and distorts her true historical identity.

Evaluation

Cleopatra VII was a remarkable political figure of her time, and her strategic thinking and multilingualism were recognized among the powers that be in Rome. Unlike other Ptolemaic pharaohs, she earned the respect of the Egyptians by mastering their local language, Egyptian, which is significant because she was the last and only Egyptian-speaking king.

Faced with challenges at home and abroad, Cleopatra sought to consolidate her power through alliances with Caesar and Antony. The meeting with Antony in particular was a large-scale event that she meticulously organized, and her charm and intelligence were enough to win him over. However, the internal problems of the Ptolemaic dynasty were not resolved despite her efforts. Plagued by corruption and power struggles, the dynasty struggled to maintain even a basic military presence.

Cleopatra’s time was a time of decline for the Ptolemaic dynasty, and she had to rely on foreign support to keep the dynasty alive. Her political ambitions were thwarted, however, as her alliance with Antony eventually led to defeat at the naval battle of Actium. During her reign, she coldly used money and power to run the country, and she didn’t hesitate to eliminate even her own close relatives. This was the only option available to her at the time, but in the end, even her efforts couldn’t stop Egypt’s decline.

The story of Cleopatra’s reign makes her abilities even more remarkable when compared to other Ptolemaic dynasty figures of her time. Her father, Ptolemy XII, and her sister, Berenike IV, were dethroned and executed respectively after a failed civil war and a rebellion, and Cleopatra remained Egypt’s last hope in the midst of this turmoil. While her time ultimately ended in tragedy, her fierce survival and political endeavors still shine through history.
